A new artist enters the independent music scene with his eagerly anticipated debut single, a rebellious, punk-infused indie-rock song that expresses self-centeredness, recklessness, and the desire to be completely unaccountable for one’s actions without any shame.
Bad Blood, the stage name of Northeast-based Matt Dean, hopes to establish himself in the alternative-rock scene with his song “A Birthmark On My Hip.” The song is the result of his promise to pursue a professional music career, which already appears to be a sensible choice.

Dean is eager to write and record songs that are not readily “pigeonholed under one genre,” drawing on the influences of Alt-J, 21 Pilots, Lana Del Ray, Nirvana, and Paul Simon. Through ominous soundscapes and carefully chosen lyric material, the Whitley Bay musician seeks to create music-moods that tell a tale. His music forces the listener to become the main character of each track.
Catchy indie themes, syncopated driving guitar riffs, and smashing drumming are all strewn throughout “A Birthmark On My Hip.” Its catchy chorus has an Arctic Monkeys-inspired vibe (but more grungy, heard in its melancholy lyric delivery). The track undoubtedly has some punk undertones; screams of “let me teach you all about my wicked way” relate to the numb, remote, and indifferent feelings that are “carefree about any consequences.”
