New Music: Rekka Featuring King Thayo – Light One Up

“Light One Up,” the latest single from Portland, Oregon-based female emcee Rekka, is a 4/20 anthem that celebrates the widely observed but unofficially recognised event. “Light One Up,” featured worldwide performing artist King Thayo and produced by SmokeM2D6, is a reggae-infused hip-hop track highlighting Rekka’s admiration for marijuana culture, particularly in her home state, which was the first state in the United States to decriminalise cannabis in 1973.

Rekka’s music releases have garnered a loud following, including Hidden Gem, Rekka Tracks, and You Been Sayin’. They have powerful hitting beats, nearly deafening bass lines, with lyrics written by her. Light One Up makes Rekka demonstrate her rhythmic flow in this allusion to smoking. Her single is a devilish surprise, with an addicting bassline functioning as a trampoline on which she soars effortlessly. When she chooses to show off her composing skills, the sound effects are powerful and bizarre, nearly bending time.

SmokeM2D6’s reggae/hiphop-infused record is as lively as ever, with crisp guitar plucks, pulsing bass lines, and powerful drumming. With her dominating melodic flow and sophisticated cadence, Rekka clearly holds down the fort as she expresses her great love for the marijuana industry and its existence in her native state of Oregon.

The song is accompanied with a bright video directed by Diondre Collins of Collective Films. It begins with Rekka buying at the local dispensary Cannabis Curb, while King Thayo makes his film debut as the shop’s business owner, when he and Rekka meet for the first time. The images also include different performance cuts of both artists as well as a party scenario with intriguing dance choreography and hazy aesthetics that pay homage to the cannabis culture.

Rekka, an Oregon native, is a singer, songwriter, and hip-hop musician noted for her down-to-earth nature and dynamic, engaging live performances. Rekka rose to prominence in Portland in 2018 after partnering on the hit single “I’m Back” with Trail Blazers official DJ DJ.O.G ONE. Rekka received the “In Good Hands Award” at the 2021 Star Awards in Portland, an event created to honour, recognise, and celebrate those who have made significant contributions to culture.
